On August 15, 2018, Zhang Yan, President of Jinling University of Science and Technology and Chairman of the Smart Agriculture Branch of Jiangsu Agricultural Society, visited Jiangsu Three&Three to guide the development of artificial intelligence and big data in the direction of smart agriculture. Jiangsu Three&Three is a smart agriculture IoT solution service provider, focusing on four major fields: smart agriculture, smart industry, smart environmental protection, and smart transportation. It is a pioneer in building smart agriculture.
Jinling University of Science and Technology has hosted seminars with themes such as "Agricultural Credit Reporting and Agricultural Product Quality and Safety" and "Agricultural Internet of Things Technology Training". It has also hosted large-scale events such as the 2016 Nanjing International Smart Agriculture Expo, serving the "mass entrepreneurship and innovation". It has also organized a series of science popularization activities such as "Internet of Things Technology Knowledge", which have been recognized by the Provincial Association for Science and Technology, the Provincial Agricultural Society, and member units. In 2016, the branch won the first prize in the branch assessment organized by the Provincial Agricultural Society.
At the meeting, Principal Zhang Yan pointed out the following points:
1. Smart agriculture is the smart economy in agriculture, or the specific manifestation of smart economic forms in agriculture. Smart agriculture is an important component of the smart economy; For developing countries, smart agriculture is a major component of smart economy, and it is the main way for developing countries to eliminate poverty, achieve latecomer advantages, catch up with economic development, and achieve catch-up strategies.
2. As a new engine for agricultural development, artificial intelligence may truly enable the realization of "conceptual agriculture" such as intelligent farms, intelligent plant factories, intelligent ranches, intelligent fishing grounds, intelligent orchards, intelligent workshops for agricultural product processing, and green intelligent supply chains for agricultural products. In fact, a new agricultural revolution brought about by truly intelligent robot technology and machine learning algorithms is unfolding in the fields of countries around the world.
3. Perhaps artificial intelligence+agriculture is really the controller of future agriculture? Perhaps the future human famine will really need to be solved by artificial intelligence. Data shows that the world's population is currently 7.2 billion, with 780 million people facing the threat of hunger. By 2050, the global population is expected to reach 9 billion, which means that the amount of food we produce needs to increase by 60%. At the same time, humanity is facing an energy crisis that relies on petroleum agriculture, soil and environmental damage caused by excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides, and threats to human health.
Therefore, in the context of limited arable land resources, increasing agricultural output while maintaining sustainable development, the application prospects of artificial intelligence in the agricultural field are undoubtedly very promising. We can see intelligent robots for farming, sowing, and picking, as well as intelligent recognition systems for soil detection, disease and pest detection, climate disaster warning, and intelligent wearable products for livestock used in animal husbandry. These applications are helping us increase output, improve efficiency, and reduce the use of pesticides and fertilizers. But these are still in the early stages and need to rely on specific geographical environments or planting and breeding models to achieve. There is still a long way to go for artificial intelligence agriculture worldwide, especially for China.
